Best Dress Sneakers That Actually Look Good

The dress sneaker category has expanded a lot in recent years. Every brand seems to have one. Problem is, most of them look like running shoes wearing a leather costume.
I spent several weeks testing pairs that actually pull off the “dressy but comfortable” thing without looking ridiculous.
What Counts as a Dress Sneaker
For me, a dress sneaker needs to pass the squint test. If someone glances at your feet from across a meeting room, they shouldn’t immediately think “sneakers.” It should read as a sleek, low-profile shoe that happens to have a flexible sole.
That means no chunky outsoles, no visible mesh panels, and no athletic branding. Keep it simple.
Beckett Simonon Reid
These are probably the cleanest dress sneakers I’ve tested. The calfskin leather has a slight sheen that reads more like a dress shoe, and the slim profile keeps things looking sharp. They’re handmade in Colombia and the stitching quality is excellent.
At around $200 on their direct model, they punch well above their weight. The only catch is they’re made to order, so expect a few weeks of wait time.
CLAE Bradley
CLAE has been doing minimalist sneakers for a while, and the Bradley is their most polished option. The leather is smooth, the sole is low-profile, and the overall shape works well under slim or tailored pants.
Priced around $170, these are accessible and hold up surprisingly well. The cushioning is adequate for a full day but nothing exceptional. If you’re on your feet all day, you might want something with more support.
Magnanni Elonso
Magnanni brings actual dress shoe expertise to their sneakers, and it shows. The Elonso looks like a shoe a cobbler would make, not a sneaker brand. The leather is beautiful, the Bolognese construction gives it real flexibility, and the patina finish ages like proper dress shoes.
At around $350, they’re a real investment, but they bridge the gap between sneakers and dress shoes better than anything else I’ve tried. Perfect for guys who work in environments where actual dress shoes feel like too much.
Thursday Boot Company Premier Low
Thursday makes solid boots, and their low-top sneaker carries that same ethos. The chrome-tanned leather is thick and durable, and the Ortholite insole adds genuine comfort.
Around $150, these are the budget pick, and I mean that as a compliment. They look and feel like a much pricier shoe. My only gripe is the toe box is a bit bulky, which can throw off the proportions under very slim pants.
How to Style Them
The whole point of dress sneakers is versatility. They should work with:
- Tailored chinos or wool trousers
- A blazer and button-down combo
- Dark jeans when you want to dress them down slightly
Stick to neutral colors. White, black, navy, or grey. Anything with too much contrast or texture defeats the purpose.
Shoes That Didn’t Make the Cut
Cole Haan GrandPro looked promising but the “sneaker meets Oxford” thing felt forced. The hybrid sole is too obviously athletic.
Veja Esplar makes a great casual sneaker but it’s too sporty for dress sneaker territory. Save those for weekends.
